Physics Wallah Success Story: How Alakh Pandey Built PW

Physics Wallah Success Story: How Alakh Pandey Built PW

Alakh Pandey was once a Physics teacher, before he founded a famous education company named Physics Wallah.

There were no national networks of learning centres. No large office of the corporation. No valuation of a billion dollars was made.

There was a teacher, there was a camera and there were students who wanted to learn.

It was a simple start which would eventually turn into one of the most talked about edtech startups in India.

The Physics Wallah Success Story is not only about the start-up of Physics Wallah getting big. It's about getting to know students, establishing trust and making a simple lesson a huge business.

It Started With Teaching

In 2014, Alakh Pandey began his online teaching journey by uploading his content to YouTube, primarily on Physics, and competitive exams.

He was a simple and talkative teacher. Rather than use confusing language, he sought to communicate the ideas in a manner that would be accessible to the students.

This method which was used was related to the learners.

The free content on its YouTube channel may reach over two million students by 2020, Physics Wallah claims.

PW wasn't even the big company that it is today.

However, one was developed first, such was:

Trust.

Students were returning as they had seen the value in the teaching.

From YouTube to a Real Business

Pandey married up with Prateek Maheshwari with whom he formed a business in 2020 and added the technology and business know-how.

Physics Wallah Private Limited was set up and the PW app was launched.

This was a turning point.

Now the business could take the next step and develop a learning platform with courses, study material, tests and other learning content.

It was also good timing.

The pandemic has compelled millions of students to shift to online school. However, PW already possessed one thing many new online education companies were still attempting to develop—a community of students, who knew their teachers.

The Power of Affordable Education

The Physics Wallah business model has been successful in many ways, including its focus on affordability.

There are millions of students in India who wish to receive quality education, but cannot afford high-priced coaching programmes.

PW leveraged this opportunity to create its product.

It didn't aim to attract only high quality customers at high prices, but instead aimed to attract students that were many times the size with courses that were many times the cost.

This also enabled the company to think out of the box for the larger cities in India.

The students were not required to be from Delhi, Mumbai or any other big education centers to attend the online classes of PW.

The company will be able to bring teachers and educational content to students nationwide.

The 2022 Unicorn Moment

It was in 2022 that the next big step took place.

Physics Wallah's Series A round, with funding from WestBridge Capital and GSV Ventures, was $100 million.

The valuation of the company put the value of the firm at roughly $1.1 billion, making it Physics Wallah India's 101st unicorn at that time.

This was quite a feat given that PW had started its business without a large dependence on external funding.

The investment opened up additional avenues for the company to grow its technology, classes, teams and offline footprint.

However, it wasn't the end of the story for becoming a Unicorn.

It was the start of a much greater challenge: How do you scale without losing the trust of students that you had gained in the first place?

PW Goes Beyond Online Classes

During the growth of Physics Wallah, it was increasing with more categories of the exams and more segments of education.

The firm also began to develop learning centers away from the computer, and with a hybrid format.

This is somewhat of an oddball approach for an online-first education company, isn't it?

However, it was good business to do.

The combination of online learning and physical classrooms offers a unique blend of reach and convenience, one face-to-face interaction, and a structured learning environment.

Ultimately, PW developed a blended approach to learning that merged the online and in-person learning environments.

It has a total of 303 offline centres with its public filings, as of June 30, 2025. At the end of March 2026 the number was 353 centres.

The company also grew into school education, government exams, skilling and more.

A Difficult Phase for Edtech

The pandemic has brought a much-needed boom in Indian edtech.

However, the internet learning frenzy has come to a halt and companies were forced to rethink their expenditure and growth strategies.

Physics Wallah also had to deal with the pressure.

The company's revenue from operations for the FY2025 have been around ?2,886 crore and net loss has been around ?243 crore.

Increasing revenue is not the only thing that's difficult for a fast-growing company.

The larger issue is whether or not business can be expanded effectively.

This was one of the aspects to which PW took great notice.

FY2026: A New Stage of Growth.

The company's FY26 results were quite impressive.

PW had estimated its revenue from operations at about ?3,900 crore for FY2026, which is about 35% higher than the previous year's figure, according to its filing with the stock exchange.

As at March 31, 2026 the company had 5.34 million paid users and 353 offline centres.

It has posted its EBITDA to be around ?549 crore and its profit before tax is positive at around ?10 crore.

But, other expenses must be taken into account, as the company still made a small net loss on the year; it is not fair to say that PW is just a fully profitable company.

But there has been a change of emphasis in the numbers, from fast expansion to improving operating performance.

From the start-up to a listed company.

The next big milestone in the Physics Wallah Success Story was in November 2025.

After the IPO, Physics Wallah has become a Pvt. Ltd Company and is listed in NSE and BSE.

The issue size of IPO was about Rs.3480 crores with the price band of Rs.103 to Rs.109 per share.

The stock opened at NSE at Rs.145, which is nearly 33% higher than the issue price of Rs.109.

The company was founded with online physics lessons, so going to public markets was a big shift for them.

As a listed company comes with other responsibilities with regards to financial performance, transparency, and long-term growth.

What makes this Physics Wallah's success story inspiring?

The most fascinating aspect of the story is that PW did not start out trying to be a big company; in fact, the idea of doing so was not even present in the beginning.

It started with the solution of one of the problems:

Students are required to be educated in a comprehensible, accessible manner.

That was the company's starting point and it has slowly developed from there.

The audience was created by providing free content on YouTube.

The PW app developed a well-organised platform.

Low cost courses enabled access to more students.

Physical access added to offline centres.

New categories created a new market.

Today, technology and Artificial Intelligence are assisting the company to scale up its operations significantly.

One of the most important takeaways from PW is the process of gradual change, as that's the way it goes for all entrepreneurs.

5 Lessons Entrepreneurs Can Learn From PW

1. Start With a Real Problem

A start up doesn't have to be accompanied by a comprehensive business plan.

At times, the start is with addressing one clear issue for a specific group of people.

2. Build Trust Before Chasing Growth

It has taken PW to become a unicorn for students to trust the teachers in its schools.

That audience became an important bedrock with which to build future growth.

3. Know Your Customers

PW knew that access to education was important to a big number of Indian students and that it had to be affordable.

Understanding your audience's needs can result in a more valuable business than copying your competition.

4. Expand When the Core Works - 4th Edition.

The idea was to create a following for education and then branch out into other exams, off-line centres and other learning categories, PW first went with an education building, then the other exams, off-line centres and other learning categories.

Growth is more effective if it is from a solid base.

5. Growth will need to be sustainable.

The growth of the revenues is significant, but also costs, efficiency, and profitability.

PW's FY2026 performance is an illustration of how a growth phase of a startup will eventually have to deal with the quality and sustainability of its growth.

Journey is still continuing.

The Physics Wallah Success Story is yet to be written.

It's evolved from a teacher teaching physics on YouTube to a company that has millions of paying customers, hundreds of offline centres and is listed on the stock exchange.

However, the core concept is never lost and is still easy to understand and more accessible: Education should be easier to grasp and more accessible.

Perhaps this is the most important one to be learnt from Alakh Pandey's journey.

It's not always necessary that you have a large team, a lot of money and a flawless business plan on the first day.

At times, there is a need to grasp a true problem, get people to stick to it and continually improve your solution.

There was a teacher who began to teach physics to students. By the time it was purchased by the company it had become a much larger educational enterprise.

What's interesting is the Physics Wallah's story and why we should learn it.
