Rent A Tree: The Indian Startup Changing How We Buy Mangoes

Umesh Damodaran Rent A Tree
Rent A Tree: The Indian Startup Changing How We Buy Mangoes

He Didn’t Just Sell Mangoes. He Let People Rent a Mango Tree

If you have to walk to a market to purchase a box of mangoes, try to select a mango tree, rent it for a season and wait for the mangoes to come to your door.

This seems like it's ridiculously easy.

However, it is this type of thinking that has inspired the idea of a business, “Rent A Tree”, which was initiated by Umesh Damodaran.

What started with some friends sharing mangoes, grew to become a different approach to people and farmers, and food and love.

The mango isn't the only character of this story.

It's about an everyday experience and how it can be understood from a new angle to become a business.

It Started With Mangoes

Mangoes play an important role in summers in India.

As the weather starts to warm up, each year people await the arrival of the season. From the farms to homes all over the country, come Alphonso, Kesar, Dasheri, Banganapalli and other varieties.

The trip for most consumers is easy.

They go to a market, select the mangoes they want and pay for them.

However, the experience had dawned on Umesh Damodaran's mind.

As he distributed some of the high-quality Alphonso mangoes to his friends and neighbours, he saw people weren't just interested in tasting the mangoes.

They had a desire to learn more.

  • From where were the mangoes purchased?

  • Where had they been planted on a farm?

  • Would they be able to harvest the mangoes from an entire tree?

It could well have been a curiosity the question of it.

Rather, it was the beginning of a new business model instead.

A Case Study of the Conversion of a Simple Question into a Business

Damodaran realised the potential of bringing the mango growers and consumers together.

Rent A Tree's fundamental concept is easy to understand.

A mango tree can be leased for one season and the customers will get the mangoes from the leased tree.

The customer gets in touch with the tree and its fruit much earlier than he/she would buy mangoes after they are mangoed.

This alters the association of the client with the product.

Now mango has come out of a shop.

There's now a tale there.

There exists a certain tree.

There is a farm.

A farmer is caring for this tree.

And a customer awaits the harvest.

It's a vital component of the concept of that emotional bond.

Increasingly, people are seeking to know where their food comes from. They want fresh food, more transparency and in some cases, just a closer bond with the individuals who make what they consume.

Rent A Tree strives to make that connection.

Why Rent a Tree?

It may seem like a novelty at first to have to rent a mango tree.

Consider, however, what will happen when someone rents one.

These are not just mangoes they are paying for.

They are involved in farming activities, in a limited manner.

Customer will be able to determine what tree he/she has purchased and where the tree is planted. During that time of year the fruit from that tree can be harvested.

This makes it a memorable experience for mango enthusiasts for which they can hardly find an equal in a supermarket.

The anticipation is another aspect.

  • The tree is selected by you.

  • You sit and watch the crop grow.

  • It's cared for by the farmer.

  • And finally the mangoes come.

In an increasingly world of fast makes and buys, this is a new paradigm that allows buying something that has been grown in a natural way via an app.

This Is an Opportunity for Farmers to Have Another Chance

The concept also addresses the other end of the food chain – farmers' side.

Often farmers face several problems from sowing a crop to feeding their customers.

It's possible to be intermediaries, transport costs, and uncertainty and changes in the market for demand.

Farm-to-consumer marketing is another possible avenue for agricultural product sales that can be opened through a new marketing model which brings consumers closer to the farm.

Reports of Rent A Tree suggest that customers can pay advance for the season's harvest of the tree.

This fosters a different dynamic with the consumer and farmer.

The farmer is aware of the interest of a specific customer in the produce and the customer is aware of the source of the fruit.

Not a substitute for the old-fashioned ag supply chain.

Rather, it is a different consideration of the means by which farm produce can be delivered to the consumers.

The Alphonso Mango

The most popular variety. This is the most popular variety, Alphonso Mango.

The mangoes story is an integral part of the Alphonso mangoes.

Alphonso mangoes are one of the most popular premium varieties of mangoes in India with their sweetness, aroma and unique texture.

They're more than fruits to many mango lovers.

These are all things that happen seasonally.

This is why they are especially well suited to a model that is based on anticipation and direct connections between the farm and the consumer.

A customer that will hire a tree will probably be interested in a lot more than just the most affordable mangoes on the market.

They might want a certain variety, association with the farm or want to know where their food is from.

This allows for a business to not only sell a product but an experience associated with the product.

There, the concept from the business perspective comes into play.

What Constitutes an Experience? What Does It Mean to Make a Farm Into an Experience?

In today's business environment, companies may fight it out for a number of factors other than price.

  • Coffee is a product that a coffee shop can sell, but the atmosphere is an item that can be sold as well.

  • A travel company will be able to sell a trip, but in addition they can market an experience.

  • Likewise, Rent A tree not only trading mangoes!

It is developing an experience about the mango journey.

The customer receives a link with the tree, with the farm and with the harvest.

This ensures that the product is more memorable.

Such an approach can be especially effective for agricultural companies as consumers are typically distant from the farms that supply them with food.

Mangoes can be eaten regularly by people who never have a chance to see a commercial mango farm.

With Rent A Tree, this distance is reduced.

The customer may NEVER be a farmer, but he/she does get a glimpse into the farming process.

Planting Beyond One Tree

It's not only the beginning of the idea that makes a business story interesting.

It's what occurs subsequent to people reacting to it.

In 2026, there were approximately 160 customers and they were operating mango orchards in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Kerala through Rent A Tree, as reported.

The volume of numbers might be less in comparison with India's huge agri market, but the business model proves something.

The power of a simple and seemingly strange idea is that it can have customers when it fulfills a tangible need.

This time, not just for mangoes though.

It is for a closer contact with food source.

Expanding the business into various regions and showing that a local agricultural concept can be developed into a model that can be implemented in various farming communities.

A Lesson of Business Learned From a Mango Tree

It's a good reminder for business owners.

There are lots of people that believe to start a business they must be able to invent something new.

This isn't necessarily the case.

In some cases, the opportunity is there, waiting to be seized.

  • Mangoes were being cultivated.

  • They were available for farmers to buy.

  • People had been purchasing them.

  • The innovation was the way that the customer could get involved in the process.

This is a strong approach to definition of entrepreneurship.

Instead of asking:

What is a product that I can create?

An entrepreneur can also inquire:

“What is an experience that I want to make more exciting, interesting or ordinary.”

This question can result in entirely different types of businesses!

Today's popular culture is centered on technology. Today's culture is dominated by technology.

The simple idea doesn't necessarily make for a simple business, of course.

Weather, seasons and crop conditions and farm management are all critical factors affecting agriculture.

If a business offers the harvest of a certain tree it also has to go through the vagaries of farming.

A tree isn't a factory!

Can vary from season to season.

This implies that what the customers expect, how the farm is run, how the transportation and harvest are managed all become a part of the business.

There's the issue of keeping the trust as well.

When a customer buys a tree, they must have a guarantee that the tree is being properly identified, cared for and the harvest delivered, as promised by the farm.

This is when a creative business idea should be accompanied by sound business operations behind it.

The story of Rent A Tree, is not just the tale of a great idea, it's the tale of a great idea and a great company.

It's about creating that vision into something customers can rely on.

Creating Consumer to Become Participant

Perhaps the most fascinating of all the model is the change of customer's role.

Typically, the consumer would wait until the product is available on the market.

The customer is engaged with the product much earlier with Rent A Tree.

They are well aware that there is a mango tree somewhere in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu or Kerala which they have bought.

Those nitty-gritty details can transform a familiar product into something entirely different.

It also accesses an aspect of consumer behavior that is becoming more crucial in the 21st century – consumers seek stories behind products.

They wish to know:

  • The Maker of something.

  • Where it came from.

  • The methods used in the production.

  • And sometimes, what purchase means to the people that make it.

Those stories aren't new in agriculture.

The hurdle is to get them closer to the consumer.

A Look at Some of the Insights That Other Entrepreneurs Could Find Useful

There are a number of lessons for those considering launching a business in the story of the mango tree.

1. Look Closely at Normal Behaviour, First

Damodaran's concept was not abstract, but was based on a business concept. It was a common occurrence in sharing mangoes that led to this opportunity.

2. Hear Out Strange Questions From Customers

Sometimes, an unmet need will be expressed in a strange request.

3. Seek Out the Value in the Product

The mango is just a fruit; it's a lot more than that! The farm connection, anticipation and story imparts an additional value.

4. Determine If There Is a Willingness to Pay

Interesting idea isn't necessarily a successful enterprise. The only way that customers are going to spend money is if they believe that they find enough value in it.

Rent A Tree: An Entrepreneurial Model that is a Twist on an Existing Product and Customer Experience is a great example of how an entrepreneur can take an unusual idea, and adapt it into a viable commercial model by pairing an existing product with an alternate customer experience.

More Than a Mango Is a Business

In essence, Rent A Tree is a tale of viewpoint.

  • Pre-existing trees to be used by mango farmers.

  • Mangoes were in demand with consumers already.

  • It was the connection between the two sides that was the problem.

Umesh Damodaran perceived the void and asked a question which most wouldn't ask:

If people were able to rent the tree, what would that be?

That question took buying fruit to a new level – it became a connecting experience.

Maybe that's the larger take for all entrepreneurs.

Sometimes, innovation comes in the form of a robot, an app or a futuristic machine, but often, it comes in the form of this.

At times, it's concealed within a familiar thing like a mango tree.

The following business concept could be right under our nose.

All we need to do is to see the ordinary things from a different perspective.
