Policybazaar Case Study: How an Online Insurance Platform Changed Insurance Buying in India

Many Indians found it difficult to purchase insurance. The agents were relied upon, people lacked information about various policies and they struggled to compare policies before deciding.

With a simple idea in mind, Policybazaar has made its way into this segment – making insurance more understand, compare and purchase online.

The idea of an insurance comparison site has blossomed into one of India's leading digital insurance companies since its inception in 2008. Today, Policybazaar is a part of PB Fintech and has a number of businesses like Paisabazaar.

The Beginning of Policybazaar

Policybazaar was started in 2008 with the aim of raising awareness, choice and transparency in insurance distribution. The company was started by businessmen such as Yashish Dahiya and Alok Bansal, who are also on the leadership team of PB Fintech.

The company found that it shares a common issue in the insurance market: sometimes it is not easy for consumers to find out about a variety of insurance options before making a purchase.

Rather than making a conventional insurance firm, Policybazaar created a technology led platform where policyholders can analyze insurance merchandise from a variety of insurance firms.Policybazaar built a technology driven platform that enables policyholders to lookup insurance goods offered by various insurance firms instead of building a traditional insurance firm.

It was simple concept: gather information, comparison and buying data on one digital platform.

From Comparison Website to Insurance Platform

Policybazaar's initial thrust was to enable its users to compare insurance policies. Through the years, the business grew to include a wider range of digital insurance products including health, life, term, motor, travel and other insurance products.

It has also developed technology and data systems to enhance the customer experience and services for insurers. PB Fintech's technology, data and analytics enable consumers to research products and assist insurance partners in connecting with the right consumers, the company said.

The company also diversified out of the insurance business to launch Paisabazaar, a personal credit product comparison and access website in 2014.

This was an important element of the overall PB Fintech business model.

How does Policybazaar Earn Money?

Policybazaar does not take insurance policies directly, but rather follows the market-place and distribution approach.

Policybazaar gets commissions and other fees from insurance company partners when the customers buy insurance on its platform. These commissions are based on the commissions allowed by the insurance regulator IRDAI in India, said the company.

This forms a three-sided business model:

Consumers have a place to find out about and contrast insurance.

Insurers get access to customers through a digital distribution channel.

When an insurance product is sold as a part of Policybazaar, the firm makes money.

The company also takes a “asset-light” strategy, which means that it does not underwrite insurance or carry credit risk on its balance sheet.

Developing trust with technology.

Trust and clarity are critical to a product like insurance. Hence, Policybazaar emphasized a lot on providing information easily online.

It has a website where clients can browse through the various types of insurance, compare options and make electronic insurance buys. The company has also put in place investments in service, technology integrations and after-sales service.

The business has also evolved over the years to have physical and assisted journeys in addition to digital journeys, with a focus on more complex insurance products.

The technology + human assistance is one of the important aspects of its approach.

Policybazaar's Growth in Numbers

The size of the company has been dramatically transformed since its days of inception.

In FY2025-26, PB Fintech generated total revenue of ₹6,794 crore which increased by 37% YoY. Its consolidated P&A was at ₹670 crore, as against ₹311 crore in the previous year.

In FY2026-27, the company has accelerated its growth in the insurance segment. In June 2026, PB Fintech claimed to have sold 71.6 million insurance policies since its inception and a run rate of ₹355 billion in insurance premiums per annum.

These are not standalone figures of Policybazaar's revenue or profit figures, but numbers relating to the wider PB Fintech ecosystem.

From Start up to Listed company.

In November 2021, another landmark was when PB Fintech listed on the stock exchange.

It was listed on NSE and BSE with an issue price of ₹980 per share. It has an NSE trading symbol of POLICYBZR.

The listing was an important milestone for the company in terms of its growth and transition from a private startup to a public fintech firm.

What is Interesting about the Business Model?

The Policybazaar story isn't all about online insurance sales. It illustrates the way technology could streamline a complex industry. It demonstrates how technology can make an industry that's already complicated simpler.

The company did not develop insurance products, but rather it developed a platform for consumers to link with insurance companies.

Its model combines:

  • Compare and discover with digital tools.
  • Insurance distribution
  • Technology and data
  • Customer service
  • Partnerships with insurers
  • Both assisted and offline sales channels.

The company has also branched out beyond the individual consumer. The PB for Business platform targets SMEs and larger companies that are looking for corporate insurance solutions, as well as startups.

The Bigger Lesson From Policybazaar

Digital transformation can, as the Policybazaar Case Study demonstrates, be about the development of a new product entirely, but often it's about an existing product being transformed.

In other instances, it is about creating something out of an already existing industry and making the customer experience easier.

Indian insurance was already in existence. The harder part was understanding, comparing and making it more easily accessible to the people.

They saw and capitalized on that gap, and slowly grew from an insurance comparison website to a digital financial-services ecosystem that covers a wide range of insurance products.

Nothing is more evident than this for an entrepreneur: Business ideas can be built by recognising pain points in the market and removing them with technology.

How a narrow niche insurance solution can grow into a much bigger insurance ecosystem as it keeps responding to customers' needs and market opportunities is evident in the story of Policybazaar, which evolved from a niche insurance marketplace to a listed fintech firm over 12 years.
